Improvement of public health

The living standards in central Kalimantan's peatlands and respiratory illnesses related to haze and smoke (caused by peat fires) raise significant concerns about public health in the region. The Central Kalimantan Peatland Project will provide some initial support to improve the situation.

Working towards improved health care
Based on the needs as identified in the livelihood security assessments, the project initiates education groups in which local villagers are informed on (mal-) nutrition, childcare and other topics.

The project also develops facilities necessary for maintenance of public health. It will contribute to the revitalization of the ‘Posyandu’ health services system, a network of local health centres which bring health services closer to the local community. The project will provide equipment and training and guidance for volunteers and health workers, and if necessary provide resources for construction of new Posyandus. It will also assess water quality and availability and if necessary provide access to clean drinking water through the construction of pumps and wells.
