Improved awareness on the causes of peatland degradation and increased capacity to solve these problems are crucial for maintaining and restoring the economic and natural values of Central Kalimantan's peatlands. The Central Kalimantan Peatlands Project works with local communities, governments and NGOs to accomplish this.

Many initiatives such as poverty reduction, health improvement, fire prevention and restoration of hydrology are performed for, or in close cooperation with local communities.  These activities do not only enable local inhabitants to provide input to the project, but also provide opportunities to transfer knowledge to the people.  The Central Kalimantan Peatlands Project organises workshops and training courses to make local inhabitants aware of causes and effects of peatland degradation.  It also provides practical solutions to these problems in particular with regard to fire prevention, poverty reduction and improvement of public health. This should form a solid basis for sustainable use of resources and improved livelihoods that extends beyond the project’s implementation period.

Coordination meetings with the different partners, among others through the Local Advisory Committee, provides opportunities to exchange information on best practices and lessons learned with regard to peatland management. Incorporation of information from different working fields helps with development of an integrated vision on peatland management. This enables implementation of a sustainable management strategy for Central Kalimantan's peatlands that takes all major interests into account.
